Almost three-quarters of projects conducted by renovation and construction companies whose business involves smoothing and painting of interior walls concerns residential construction. Although most of the orders come from individual customers, they are, at the same time, most likely to handle painting on their own. Building wholesalers are the preferred place to buy interior finish plaster and paints for professional users, while DIY stores are most often chosen by retail consumers, according to PMR’s latest report entitled “Interior finish plaster and decorative paints market in Poland 2016 – Market analysis and development forecasts for 2016-2021”.
For the needs of the report, PMR conducted 205 interviews with employees of companies whose business involves painting of interior and exterior walls, who have the knowledge of decorative paints used in projects run by their companies. Moreover, PMR also interviewed 404 adult Poles who painted their entire home or selected rooms in 2016 or plan to paint their dwelling or its part by the end of the current year.
Almost three-quarters of orders (in terms of value) conducted by the surveyed renovation and construction companies whose business involves smoothing and painting of interior walls concerns the residential construction segment (mostly single-family houses). The surveyed companies revealed that 40 percent of the projects involved new buildings, while the balance of 60 percent of the workload are renovation projects on existing buildings.
The commercial segment (mostly office buildings and retail and service facilities) generates almost half (44 percent) of the value of orders in the non-residential construction sector. Each of public construction and industrial construction accounted for 28 percent of the orders’ value.
Individual customers are the main source of orders for renovation and construction companies whose business involves painting of interior walls. 70 percent of the surveyed companies carry out jobs ordered by individual customers, down by 16 percentage points compared to the survey conducted in 2013. A significant number of orders (in particular those handled by larger firms) comes from private companies, state-owned enterprises, general contractors and other construction companies.
On the other hand, the consumer survey reveals that professional renovation and construction companies were hired for just one-quarter of all renovation projects in 2016. In most cases, the painting job was handled by the respondents (45 percent) or their closest family members (39 percent).
Builders wholesalers as the key place for professionals to buy finish plaster and decorative paints
Building wholesalers and building depots are the most popular distribution channel, as reported by renovation and construction companies. The channel is preferred by 93 percent buyers of plaster finish products and 82 percent purchasers of decorative paints. Over half of the respondents buy the products from DIY stores and stores specialising in selling paints and painting accessories. At the same time, one out of every five companies said they bought paints and interior finish plaster directly from the producers.
On the other hand, individual customers prefer DIY stores when it comes to buying paints and interior finish plaster products, as indicated by 60 percent and 58 percent, respectively, of the respondents. Approximately one-quarter of the survey participants buy the products from specialist stores. Then come building wholesalers and depots where consumers are more likely to buy interior finish plaster solutions (19 percent) than decorative paints (12 percent).
Castorama is a DIY store which the surveyed companies are most likely to visit to buy interior plaster finish products (72 percent) and decorative paints (68 percent). Leroy Merlin was mentioned as the second-most popular DIY store (39 percent) ahead of OBI (27 percent). In most of the stores, the purchasing preferences relating to interior plaster finish and paints are very similar to one another. This shows that when deciding to choose a given store, the companies tend to buy both interior finish plaster and decorative paints.
The Castorama chain is also the most popular place among retail customers as 49 percent of them visit Castorama stores to buy finish plaster solutions and 45 percent buy decorative paints. One-quarter of the respondents buy the products at OBI (26 percent), while one out of every five respondents choose PSB Mrowka stores (21 percent for interior finish plaster and 19 percent for paints). Slightly fewer consumers (16 percent) go to Leroy Merlin to buy finish plaster products, but as many as 29 percent of the respondents choose Leroy Merlin when they want to purchase decorative paints.
